We created the arrangements months in advance ?ˇěC with my case, to buy the tickets for the festival and obtain a week off work. In the case of Kate and Pete Burton, they'd to create significantly more complex preparations for somebody to look after their kids for any full week, and obtain flights to and from Sofia from England. Sonisphere Sofia 2011 was said to be an enormous festival, featuring the kind of Alice Cooper, Slipknot along with a couple of other bands, but none of them of this definitely mattered ?ˇěC there was just one band playing as far as we were worried, and that was Iron Maiden. Impatiently, with wonderful anticipation, we were counting the days backwards before coveted June 21 arrived. Heavy metal and rock D-Day. It might be an incredible encounter, along with a great full week to spend in Sofia with a handful of fantastic mates ?ˇěC but then we did not count on the factor known as Balkan Music Entertainment.
With seven days to visit, it had been announced that the festival was collapsing, because of various factors, and in significant part, because of Balkan Songs Entertainment by themselves because of their inadequate selection of place and ridiculous pricing. This news from the cancellation felt just like a bucket of cold water, followed by several long minutes of sheer disbelief. Was this seriously taking place? Definitely they can't mess this up? Just how can the festival be collapsing? Then followed the unavoidable surge of anger, and the growing need to vent my stress somewhere, or on someone. Anger was followed by the sobering realisation that people needed to develop an emergency contingency program, or skip the tour entirely. Consulting the tour dates about the Iron Maiden internet site, I realised that the only reasonable choice was the Sonisphere festival in Athens, on Next month, or the one at Istanbul, on June 19.
A couple of hours later, I had been about the phone with Tina Pappas, the top of the advertising and marketing department at Didi Songs Major Start off Promotions, the Greek promoter from the occasion, basically begging her to sort us by helping cover their accreditation for the show, so that we're able to go to the concert, why is this so ?ˇěC even satisfy the band and try taking some photos for posterity. Tina, to my amazement, then said that she was sorry concerning the cancellation, adding "we would be glad to provide a press pass for the festival". I do not don't forget packing my bergen actually as quickly as Used to do that sunny afternoon!
We disembarked in Athens about the morning of June 17, making the short walk from Syntagma Square down Panapestimiou Street and then onwards to Alexandras Avenue from where the coaches were ferrying hordes of enthusiasts in direction of TerraVibe Park. I was thinking of buying a ticket for the festival, just in case, as it all appeared too very good to be real. I decided to make a quick get in touch with to Tina who reassured me and lived up to her phrases: "Don't be concerned Nick, just arrive at the most important gate, your name is on the list". I thanked her, pondering to myself that they may be worth her excess weight in gold. I stocked on h2o, a bottle of vodka and I boarded the coach to TerraVibe.
TerraVibe Park is really a superbly selected location for a summer festival, a large discipline encompassed by a forest, flanked by a wonderful mountain to the right. To expect 37km north of Athens, in direction of Malakasa, and the round visit to and from Athens cost seven euro from Stathmos Larissis (Athens central train station) or the Paedeon to Areon Park (that is at Alexandras Avenue and merely across from Revenge of Rock club.)
The venue was finding packed properly as, ultimately, more than twenty five 000 folks congregated on the festival grounds ?ˇěC a welcome break from running around and trashing the centre of Athens and battling police. A band called Virus was taking part in in the Saturn stage just I was obtaining my bearings and having a refreshing consume of cold h2o. The list of bands contains the Greek black metal outfit Rotting Christ, Virus, Gojira, Mastodon, Slipknot and, obviously, Iron Maiden. I possibly could not be in several locations concurrently, so I decided to conserve my power, head for the primary stage and wait for a main functions.
Slipknot came out wearing masks and red overalls as well as their fans loved it. I reckon they'd an excellent gig. Personally, I did not appreciate it but that's just me. The line-up from the band was how big a rifle section, as well as for all those musicians, there wasn't much audio happening. At least three drummers, and Nicko McBrain might have adopted the 3 of these with 1 arm tied powering his back again. The most notable a part of their concert so far as I'm concerned was when one of their drummers was suspended up together with his whole drum kit. My opinion doesn't matter however ?ˇěC the main thing is that the people who went to see Slipknot enjoyed themselves. Some of their supporters stated they sounded excellent on the evening, so I guess they did.
Then the lights discontinued, and the audio of Satellite 15 rumbled out, then El Dorado, 2 Minutes to Midnight and Coming Home. Iron Maiden lost in force, but to my amazement, everyone else was relatively subdued. It's difficult to produce a mosh-pit and slam into people today when everyone seemed hectic with filming the concert on their cameras or mobile phones. What have metal concerts turn out to be these days?
Maiden created an energy-sapping two-hour show, having a set checklist which consisted of Dance of Demise, The Trooper, The Wicker Guy, Blood Brothers, When the Wild Wind Blows, The Evil That Males do, The Talisman and Fear of the Dark.
Musically, Iron Maiden had been as crisp and meticulous because they are within the studio, and long-term Maiden supporters anticipate nothing less from the band. Great audio and gorgeous backdrops and lighting effects, as always, though my only criticism is directed versus Bruce Dickinson who once again were able to insult the Greek fans. Every Greek fan lives with the imagine hearing Alexander the Great live, at least once in the or her lifetime. Given that every time Maiden release a new album, it is going right to number 1 within the Greek charts, you would think they can make the best and listen to it only for them, at least once ?ˇěC like a bonus. And even if they don't play it, at least don't tease them about not playing it. Bruce, that was not good, mate, you weren't amusing should you believed you had been, and it was bang out of purchase.
The encore contains The amount of the Beast, Hallowed Be Thy Name and Operating No cost. I left with a big smile on my small confront and a sense of contention that is nevertheless keeping me tingling. With respect to myself, and the Bulgarian fans who made it to Athens, thanks TerraVibe for generating a lovely festival. Individual thank you also must be prolonged to Tina and Christine Milner. Maiden ?ˇěC help you once again, somewhere on tour. Up the Irons!
