An extension failed to initialize. Can't open file extend.dat
Published: Feb.07.2006 @ 4:27 pm | Print | Email | Comment
Last Edited: Mar.15.2010 @ 8:51 am

Today out of the blue, when loading office 2002 on an xp machine, an error message appears with the text:

"An extension failed to initialize. Can't open file: extend.dat. The file may not exist, you may not have permission to open it, or it may be open in another program. Right-click the folder that contains the file, and then click Properties to check your permissions for the folder. You don't have appropriate permissions to perform this operation."

Seeing that the user was an administrator it seemed more complicated than a permission problem. What is the extend.dat file? It is a file used to cache extensions built for outlook. Seeing that our users use no extensions, the problem with the file could be fixed by either deleting it or renaming it.

If hidden files and folders are not visible you will have to set your explorer window to view those types of files. If you know how to show hidden files skip "Viewing Hidden Files".

Viewing Hidden Files: To view folders and files that are hidden, from my computer, click tools and then folder options. Click the view tab at the top of the window. Scroll down to the option Hidden files and folders. Click the option that says show hidden files and folders. Then click OK.

The Fix: Make sure outlook is closed and not running.  If you are viewing hidden files and folders, use windows explorer to go to documents and settings, then the folder of the user with the error. Next click Local Settings, then Application Data, then Microsoft, and finally click and go into the outlook folder. There is where you will find extend.dat. Now from here rename the file from extend.dat to extendOld. Restart outlook and send someone an email.

9/11: Friends, as true as I am to troubleshooting problems, that is also how true I am to wanting to know the truth. 9/11 was an inside job and we the people deserve the truth. A demolition expert opinion - Google demolition expert building 7. Use reason. What we see in all 3 of these collapses is steel failing at 100% and at the correct time to allow for what happened, buildings falling as though there is no resistance. Seeing that the time measured for the buildings to collapse completely, just above free fall speed, that would mean that the 70 or more  undamaged floors below the impact, would have to offer resistance similar to air. Now if steel has the resistance of air, why do we use steel to build sky scrappers? If you havnt seen the collapses in a while, revisit them, and watch the buildings, especially building 7.

Brilliant...this worked like a charm.  I also had the same situation...a machine that's worked fine for a while (literally years) and all of a sudden had this problem...and permissions were NOT an issue as the message implied somewhat.  Renaming it like this fixed it entirely.  Thanks for the help!

similar to the last posting - I had no luck changing the name. I did however remember having problems opening Outlook Express on my home computer from time to time.I opened the task manager and scrolled down and found two applications of Outlook running. I ended the second "Outlook process" and closed and re-opened Outlook...the error message has been solved.

Thanks. This worked perfect. No more error message. I had tried to find the extend.dat file on my own by searching my hard drive and could never find it. This lead me right to it. Renaming it solved the problem.

del "%userprofile%\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook\extend.dat"--- just to make this easy type the above line at you command prompt but make sure you close outlook first (is in Outlook.exe should not be running in the processes)

Thanks for the tip on fixing this Outlook problem. It is obviously caused by the government conspiracy phishing through our Outlook that caused this, I mean Microsoft would never have a bug or anything -  I mean a building can't collapse just because a huge amount of burning jet fuel gets hot and warps steel. Jet fuel the building designers never took into account when they certified the structure airplane crash safe. (They took into account a moving mass the weight of an airplane.) And when the one floor collapses - the entire mass of the floors above falling on the next floor below couldn't bust that floor like a hammer and cause it to collapse and then repeat this as the building pancakes.
Never mind that plans to do this have been uncovered and this is what they (Al-Qaeda) planned to do.
Thanks again for the tip though.

Unfortunately, I have upgraded to Vista  :::-(((  All I can say is Microsoft must have connections to Al Quaida since the upgrade has definitely caused myriad more problems than XP, and it must be costing billions in wasted time and effort. But to the point - documents and settings does not exist anymore. Any ideas?

Good post for the solution to the problem. Ole George Washington would be rolling in his grave to see America today. I don't think that the truth will be uncovered about 911, and if it is most American people are so consuemd in their lives to care about what is right, let alone try to do something about it. Just think about the tea party and how the first American revolution was started. If you want to do something about it don't pay taxes. Lets see what happens.

Thanks for the resolution, worked like a charm. Then I realized it was already in our Knowledge Base here where I work (DoD contractor)
Doh!
PS- Not paying taxes isn't the ideal thing to do. However, less powers and greater accountability for the office holders is the direction in which we need to head nowadays.

Thank you. This hasn't solved all my issues but at least it has taken care of the extend.dat issue.
My other issue started at the same time as the extend.dat issue. I'm also getting a message of "Unable to open your default e-mail folders. File access is denied. You do not have the permission required to access the file C:\Documents and Setting\Kay Elliott\Local Setting\Applicatin Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst.

911 was an inside job hands down.  Google terrorstorm, loose change.  Read articles from Prof Steven Jones about thermate in the buildings.  Where is the video tape of flight 77 hitting the pentagon.  Complete inside job to have the neo-cons bring us into a false war.

Please, shutup with your 9/11 was an inside job. Read the facts. Since the UFO's exist theorists have died down, they've found a different subject to pursue.  Then one of the comments referenced a movie that believed 9/11 was an inside job, and not surprisingly the scientific and engineering community openly dismissed the movie. Only crazy professors tied to "Scholars for 9/11 truth movement" supported it..you know the same professors you see believing in UFO's.  Please, don't be a fool and go around spreading garbage.

I refused to believe that 'our government' could possibly have had a hand in the events of 9/11, but eventually I could no longer ignore the facts. In all of recorded history, only three steel framed buildings have collapsed due to fire: WTC1, WTC2, and WTC7 (which was not hit by any plane, and was accross the street on the far side of the complex).
Anyone who still refuese to believe, please prove me wrong. Look at the facts, don't simply name call. Look into it. Ask yourself:
How does a 110 story building fall straight down. At frr fall speed. Twice???
Where is the plane at the Pentagon site? There is only a small hole, next to unbroken windows.
Look at the Shanksville site. Compare it to images of Lockerby.
Compare the WTC7 collapse to footage of any demolition of any Las Vegas casino. Notice anything.
We have been lied to. Again.

Are we so brain washed that we turn our minds off to the possibility all was not as it seemed? Especially considering the high number of odd things that happened that day? I guess we are. My wife gets mad every time I bring 9/11 up. I get mad because she won't even consider it. Facts is facts. Just as sure as your PC fix worked (thanks), fact is buildings were dropped that day and a lot of weird shit went down. Personally, I'd like to know the truth.

Ridiculous! You mean to tell me they smuggled several THOUSAND pounds of expolsives, along with detonators and a few tousand feet of cable. Then strung up the cables, set the detonators - I can see it now - Verizon guy - "Hey, what's up? What are you putting up there?" Covert will blow up Building 7 guy "Hey, just rigging up some detonation charges in case we ever want to demolish this building...Did you see the game last night?"Right. And all the service people - for a major Manhattan building - were too stupid to notice. Get a life.

Regarding the Twin Towers, my brother is an architect and he was watching the events unfold on 9/11 at his office. The structural engineer at the office referenced the type of construction in the buildings and said, "They better get those fires out right now or those buildings are coming down." This is not a conspiracy, nor do I think the terrorists had any idea that it would be so "successful."

Regarding the Pentagon, I also think it is weird that there is just that little hole. Where is the plane? Where are the seats, etc? This would really be a strong point if there weren't a ton of just ordinary citizens that SAW the plane crash into the building. Just go back to the news of the day. They interviewed people on the spot. So as weird as the scene looks, and I would like to understand it, it wasn't a missle... people saw a plane.

Just a suggestion for those that couldn't find the extend.dat file.  Make sure you are looking in the exact path above and not C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\OutlookIt is not in this folder.  Once I found it in the correct path, it worked.  Thanks!

It works also for Vista and Outlook 2007.
The path in Vista: <account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook
Rename extend.dat to extendOld.dat.
When I restarted Outlook in the first time after this it created a new file extend.dat, but the problem disappeared.

Thanks for the fix. Not so sure about the the 9/11 thing though.
Steel loses structural integrity after 1 1/2 hours at 300 degrees.
Jet fuel burns at 600 degrees.  The Twin Towers failed after 45 minutes.

I'm not sao lucky. I recently had a virus attack and the guys at Symantec fixed that issue. However, I'm getting this error message, followed the instructions posted, but, don't even have the extend.dat folder in there (yes, they're unhidden). I can't even launch Outlook, it won't let me. Any other suggestions? I tried running the repair program in Word, didn't help.

Exactly ...  The 9/11 "truthers" also do not believe we ever put a man on the moon..   The Iranian President doesn't believe the Jewish holocaust ever happened either ... both events have people still alive today as witnesses to both events.  Such a strong opposition to the actual truth is nothing more than self-insecure liberals wanting something to attach themselves with to have a sense of belonging..

the government admits that the fire from the planes burned up in the first fifteen minutes. lets not forget building 7 either, it wasnt hit by a plane.
we have to live in reality and live make believe land alone. never in the history of the world has a steel sky rise collapsed due to fire. there are plenty of examples of fires in other high rise buildings.
when you watch the video of the towers, they are exploding, not collapsing.

I got the same problem in Windows Xp system. This error will not be resolved by rename or delete the Extend.dat file. You have to make a new user and configure Microsoft Outlook there. You Done

I can't believe the number of people that fall for this 9/11 inside job theory. I am an engineer and any good engineer has no trouble understanding how this occured. As gullible as the American public is to follow your kind of nonsense, it is no wonder we are a country in decline. If you want a conspiracy to bitch about, focus on why our economy is in such ruin and why our government continues to spend money knowing that we are heading for a big fall. You can't spend you way out of debt. It is a shame a guy as smart as you are gets so led astray.

THanks for the fix on the "DAT" issue. As far as 9/11, I disagree. One sure way to know is when you listen to "experts" that are "certain". Recall the Challenger shuttle explosion. First word fro the solid booster "expert" was that there was not way it could have leaked. If they leak, they explode, period.
I realize that this is a strange comparison but it speaks to how people seem to always believe "experts".
One of my favorite news paper headlines of all time was" Earthquake experts don't know when the next big one will hit!"

Since then, I usually just edit this to the simplest form "Experts Don't Know".

THat about sums it up...
