If you are playing for the first time, we suggest you look at our guide first and you may begin you game easily. This RuneScape Guide is written according RuneScape office website. Don’t worry it that you can’t find the right button in your sign up in office site after you read this article.

This will take you to the world select screen. All of the game worlds are identical, but you will meet different players on each one. The easiest option is to choose the large button that says "Choose best free world for me". This will try to choose the least busy world near you.

The button on the right selects the best members-only world for you. There are far more features of the game available on the members' worlds; if you find you're enjoying RuneScape and you'd like to take the game experience further, you can subscribe and start playing on those worlds.

It would seem almost a daily ritual for me to explain to players that have sent me emails that I don’t unfortunately have the ability to give them their banned Runescape accounts back nor am I able to change their forgotten Runescape passwords. These emails mainly come from a couple of the other more popular websites like Runescape Boards and Runescape 100that I run. Sometimes inbetween the abusive responses you receive after you inform them you can’t help I’m asked if I know of any other games like Runescape considering they have been banned from Runescape.

free online rpg games like runescapeThe short answer is “yes” there are other games like Runescape, but there aren’t many that are exactly like Runescape. That is why it is so popular. I have actually written an article on Runescape 100 about online games like Runescape before. This article explains how Runescape has a few defining characteristics that separate it from other major MMORPGs.

Some of the key differences between Runescape and other popular online rpg games are that most online games like Runescape require you to download and install a base version of the game or buy a CD from a gaming store. Where as Runescape is completely browser based and dosen’t require its gamers to install the game first. Runescape, unlike many other online games, also has a free version of their game. Many of the bigger MMORPG titles like World of Warcraft don’t offer a free version. Also with the exception of World of Warcraft there really aren’t any other MMORPGs that are similar in gameplay and have the number of player playing it.

So with that said if you are looking for a fairly similar rpg game like Runescape and are willing to pay a monthly membership fee, World of Warcraft is probably a good option along with some of the other major MMORPG titles - Guild Wars, Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest II, Lineage II and Final Fantasy XI. If you are not looking for an online game that is not similar to Runescape in gameplay style but is free and popular you could check out a few major titles listed in this Most Popular MMORPG list or check out some of the MMORPGs like Maple Story and Silkroad Online.

If you know any other pay to play or free online games like Runescape please feel free to mention them in the comments below.

It’s a quick and easy process to get started in RuneScape, just need few minutes you can create an account and start playing the game!

The first step is creating a new account by clicking the "Create a Free Account". After that, you may play the game by clicking the Play RuneScape link from the RuneScape main page. This will take you to a screen which gives you the option to play in high or low detail. You’d better try the high detail mode first. If you have problems with the high detail mode, try the low detail version by going back to the front page and selecting "Play RuneScape" again. Then it will take you to the world select screen.

The initial download process will then start. During the download a grey security box will pop up. Answer 'Yes'.

When the game has loaded you will be presented with the title screen. Enter the username and password you chose when you created your account and click 'Login'. Then you come to” Character creation interface”, you will then be presented with an interface to set up your character, as shown on the left:

To start with, indicate whether you use a one- or two-button mouse. After this, you will be presented with a wide variety of options for designing what your character looks like. You can keep adjusting this as much as you like in this interface. Once you have decided upon your 'look' and entered the wide world of RuneScape, you can pay some characters to change it if you decide you'd prefer a different haircut, clothes or even gender. Also you can change your look in-game. Once you have finished you should click the 'Accept' button which will launch your character into our tutorial, where the friendly citizens of RuneScape are looking forward to greeting you.

To start the tutorial, your character will begin their RuneScape life in Lumbridge. Here you will be introduced to the basics of playing RuneScape. You will be taken through a variety of skills by the instructors, including casting spells, Fishing, Mining, combat and much more.

This should only take about 20 minutes to complete. When you've finished, your character will free the rustic town of Lumbridge from peril, and your RuneScape adventures will truly begin!

We finally get PvP combat in RuneScape. Players who reach level 20 are qualified to get into the world. Anyone who actually decides to enter the PvP world might also lose items and will not receive a headstone. This update should fresh thing up in RuneScape.

After you have a successful kill, the reward you can claim depends on a number of other factors, including the level difference between you and the value of the items lost by the dying player. Please don’t worry about being lost if you kill a low level player, because any unclaimed loot is saved for the next kills. If you are dying a lot and losing a lot of items, the game will detect this and improve your chance of getting decent rewards when you do eventually get a good kill.

The works described in Runescape site shows a good feature of this PvP combat. To prevent cheating there are various other factors taken into account. The game takes care of all level players. It calculates the rewards and rates very carefully.

A successful PKer should be able to get a good income, and PKers who get lucky might find themselves with a good drop. Higher level players get a higher rewards to reflect their increased earning ability when not PKing, such that PKing is still worthwhile for them. It aims to make PKing a fun way of earning money in the game.

A wide range of new combat equipment and XP-boosting gloves is included in the PVP-specific drop tables. Members will get access to level 78 items for all three corners of the combat triangle, including armour as well as weapons, and a new set of Ancient Magick spells. Non-members will get access to corrupt dragon equipment.

The RWT of all evil
Real-world trading (RWT) is the term we apply to the sale of RuneScape gold and items for real money (be that $US, £GBP, €euros or ¥yuan). Some players choose to buy RuneScape gold as they do not wish to spend the time or effort earning it themselves, for whatever reason – the gold-sellers do all of the work for them.

"There has been a significant increase in the amount of real-world trading this year. If we don't find a solution to RWT now, it will ruin RuneScape."

Of course, gold-sellers have to earn this RuneScape gold somehow. They overcrowd in-game resources with their bots, exploit bugs and scam legitimate players out of items and their accounts. They are the cause of the majority of rule-breaking in RuneScape, and they must be stopped. RuneScape's creator, Andrew Gower, sums it up perfectly: "There has been a significant increase in the amount of real-world trading this year. If we don't find a solution to RWT now, it will ruin RuneScape."

Real-world trading leads to all sorts of problems. We see the negatives falling into two categories: those that affect the game and those that affect our business. On the game side, the legitimate players who don't buy gold feel their efforts are going to waste - why take the time to level skills the proper way if you can just buy some gold? It cheapens the game. Also, the players who do buy gold find it becomes so easy for them to get ahead, they get bored and leave. Mod Hobagoly, Head of RuneScape Content, says, "That's the case with all cheating, whether it's buying gold or cheating your way through a console game - it's fun for a while, but the challenge goes and things quickly get boring."

On the business side, real-world trading is just part of an even bigger problem. Mod Hobagoly says, "Real-world traders believe they are running legitimate businesses. In some cases, though, it's essentially organised crime." There is a whole industry built up around it exploiting cheap labour and involving illegal activities. The majority of bots that we ban from members have been paid for with stolen credit card numbers.

Such accounts don't earn us money, they cost us money in bank refund charges - money that could be better spent on creating new content for our players; money that could help us increase the level of support our players receive. Also, in the longer-term, if we had continued to experience these problems with account fraud, then it could have led to us no longer being able to accept credit card payments from legitimate players.

The α bot
Real-world trading is a problem for every MMOG. "The first bots in RuneScape were identified by us within a few months of the game's release," says Andrew. "We dealt with them the best way we could at that time: by changing the game so they were no longer able to function." The game engine, its code, has been altered many times to break macro programs. In game, the first Random Event – we call them anti-macro events (AME) – was added to the game one month after the March 2004 release of RuneScape 2.

The majority of bots use the default character look to save time when creating new accounts - not everyone who looks like this is a bot, however.

As the game has grown, the demand for gold has grown with it, so it is worth gold-sellers' time to make smarter bots. "We keep developing technologies to combat bots, but it's like an arms race – we stop bots, they improve their macros, we stop them, they improve again," says Andrew. The longer we keep doing this, the harder it's going to be to keep stopping bots. "If we don't break that vicious cycle now, it would just keep getting worse and worse. It could reach a point where macro software becomes undetectable."

Removing unbalanced trade
Taking into account how serious this issue is and knowing that reactive methods could never completely stop real-world trading, what are the proactive solutions? Well, considering how much money is involved, one solution would have been to allow real-world trading. Why not just let players sell their RuneScape gold and items and take a small cut of the profits ourselves? "We've seen other MMOGs take that route and it works, but only to a limited extent. Some players would sell gold through their own website to avoid paying the developer a cut. Worse than that, the demand for gold was still mostly being met by players using bots and scams, ruining the experience for legitimate players," says Mod Chris81.

Mod Hobagoly says, "It would be very difficult to find a way of allowing players to buy RuneScape items for real money that doesn't cheapen the game." There might be some way of doing this, and without all the negatives, but it wasn't the right solution for ridding RuneScape of real-world traders and bots. Andrew follows with, "We looked at any number of different possible solutions. We've read independent studies and spoken with other people in the MMOG industry. Ultimately, the consensus is that the only way to remove the real-world trading market is to develop your game so you cannot make unbalanced trades."

An unbalanced trade is where one player trades something of value to another player, but does not receive something back of roughly equal value. Real-world traders have used this method to trade millions of gold pieces in exchange for nothing in game, as they will already have been paid in real money. Removing unbalanced trade will mean real-world traders can't do this, so there is no way for them to deliver gold to buyers - and if you can't sell gold, why bother farming it in the first place?

These gold-sellers are businessmen. They're in it for the money and are going to be looking at the bottom line: their profits. Mod Mark says, "The key phrase is 'not profitable'. We're changing our game in a way that doesn't negatively affect its gameplay, but which makes real-world trading not worth the effort." It's a bold move to make, and one that no other MMO developer has attempted. We are fully aware of how the RuneScape community will react to such a change, which is why we have been working hard to find the best way to implement it.

The future starts now
There will always be a handful of people who feel it's worth their time harassing our legitimate players to make real money, but the presence of such players in RuneScape will be significantly lessened, along with their associated rule-breaking. With the systems we've developed to deal with real-world traders, combined with the vigilance of our players, this handful will not pose a threat to RuneScape's future.

Removing unbalanced trade will lead to a massive reduction in trade scams and account theft, meaning our Customer Support teams can spend more time on helping our players than dealing with Abuse Reports. Also, our development teams can expend more energy on creating new game content – new skills, expanding on existing skills, continuing quest storylines - rather than developing content to stop bots.

OK I am firstly just like to say that this guide is far from a comprehensive guide to making money in Runescape, it is just a couple of the things I do to make money. I have written about my best fives ways to make money:

1. Kill chickens and collect their feathers ?this is a great one for those players out there that have a combat below 30. One of the biggest benefits is you get combat experience as well. After you have collected a fair few (at least 500) go to world one, if you are a Free to Play member, and sell them just to the East of the West Bank in Varrock. If you are a Pay to Play member, the best place to sell them is just North of the East Falador Bank. They sell for 10-20 gold each in member's worlds. You can also buy feathers from fishing shops; if you buy them in big enough quantities (at least 1000) you can make a good profit.

2. Save up 200k then go to world one, for Free to Play members, or world 2 for Pay to Play members, and buy stuff that is selling lower than its market price, and then try and find a buyer that is willing to pay what it is worth or more. This is called merchanting. To do this well you need to keep up to date with market prices, this is possibly the best way to make money in Runescape.

3. This tip is members only. Save 50k-300k then go to West Ardougne, behind castle there is a lever in the small shack pull it, you will see it say you will be teleported into level 45 wild, so do not bring anything with you but a weapon with slash. Then go North, cut the web, then go west. You will see a shack with two webs, cut both, then inside pull lever. Once you are inside talk to the banker get some money and trade the man in the east corner. You can buy laws for 210-299 gold each, basic runes sell for 3-5gp each. Then head to world one and sell them in Varrock.

4. This tip is members only. Make arrows, keeping in mind bronze arrows sell for 10 each, so do not make them. Iron sell for 20 gold each on world one; steel sell for 40 gold each, mithril 100 gold each, adamite 200 gold each and rune 400 gold each on world two.

5. A way for any member to make good XP and money is to go to the Rock Crabs in Relica and kill Rock Crabs. They are only level 13 and are super easy to kill and they drop unidentified herbs and level one clues. Sounds basic but it is a great way of making money. You get quick XP but you also you can sell unidentified herbs for 1k each in any world and 2k each when you are selling in bulk on world 2.That is my little Runescape Money Making Guide.

Well for many players of Runescape there are two main desires; one is to be very skilled; two is to be very rich. Now developing skills takes time but becoming wealthy in the game of Runescape doesn’t necessarily require you to be a high level. So how do the majority of players go about gaining Runescape Gold?

Well for most it is a method of playing the game and working out how to make money by developing skills that can earn good amounts of Runescape money in comparison to the time invested. For others they have developed a keen sense of the Runescape markets and managed to provide a service of buying and selling major raw and processed materials that are in high demand and supply. This means of making Runescape gold is referred to as merchanting and loads of information about how to go about earning gold in this way can be found in free Runescape gold guides that are on many Runescape fan sites and forums. Even with the availability of free Runescape gold guides there are also many Runescape gold guides for sale on the internet, though from my experience none are really worth the money if you have been playing for a couple of months and have reviewed a few of the free guides to making Runescape gold on Runescape fan sites and forums.

Buying Cheap Runescape Gold
The increasing alternative that many Runescape players appear to be opting for is buying cheap Runescape gold from online gold selling stores. These Runescape gold sellers sell millions of Runescape gold for real world money. Whilst this is in breach of Jagex’s terms of use it hasn’t stopped the sale of Runescape gold from such stores continuing. According to many this industry of MMO gold selling, including games like Runescape, is now a multi-million dollar industry with an estimated half a billion dollars worth of sales for the 2005/2006 financial year.

Whilst I don’t support players buying Runescape gold, it is obviously a growing option but the big question of whether it is worth it is dependant on your position within life and in Runescape. I mean if you have a full or part time job and are looking to really start enjoying Runescape without spending the first few weeks of your Runescape career scrapping together a few thousand Runescape gold pieces to buy yourself iron amour; then for as little as $10 you could get yourself a million Runescape gold pieces and be well onto your way to really leveling some of those skills and building your own ability to earn Runescape gold via playing the game.

Alternatively if you are already a fairly experience player with a 100k in your bank, you might be well advise to look into some of the free Runescape gold making guides available to turn that 100k into a few million. Either way I’d probably properly research the ways of making Runescape gold from free fan sites and guide sites before I headed off to buy a Runescape millions guide or one like it.

Can You Make Runescape Gold by Buying Runescape Gold?
Now again whilst buying Runescape Gold is against Jagex’s terms of service, the are a number of individuals that I know of personally that have benefited greatly from investments in purchasing Runescape Gold for real world money. How? Well not so long ago they purchased a few million Runescape gold from a gold seller and purchased all the rares that they could afford then sat on their rares for a few months and sold them 9 months later for a HUGE real world money profit. There are little industries anywhere in the world that you can almost be certain of 300 – 400% return on your investment every passing year, but Runescape rare items are such an industry, without fail every year Runescape rare items have increased in value and with that increase so has there real world value, and with each Runescape million gold pieces being worth $5 - $10 in the real world market there have been people that I have literally made $1000’s from selling their Runescape items when they quit the game. You can’t get those sorts of returns on the stock market. So as some have already proved spending a little money in an investment is a great way to make a little money.

Please note that we don’t recommend doing this and there are some inherent uncertainties involved not to mention is against Runescape’s rules but that hasn’t stopped other from trying and actually making large amounts of Runescape Gold and real world dollars doing it.

Runescape Auto Typer
The Runescape Auto Typer is a program or macro which types a single message at a constant rate, while you do nothing. They are used in a number of games, mainly Runescape, for the purpose of advertising or just to annoy other players and “spam” the chat log. Some use it to advertise a website in games which sell items that are used in the game, or related to the game. Though with the recent release of the Runescape grand exchange it may reduce the number of people using auto typers for Runescape considering there is a better way to sell your unwanted Runescape items.

Are you allowed to use Auto Typers?
Most games don't allow you to use them, or forbid you to use them, but people will still use them for their own gain. It is easy to tell if people are using the program, because they normally set the typing speed to very fast, and types a very long message. You can tell that no person could type that message at that speed without error, but some people will put it on slow, and it is harder to recognise. Their effect on games like Runescape is generally quite minimal, but they do fall under the category of a macro or auto bot.

Are Runescape Auto Typers Against Jagex’s TOS?
Runescape auto talkers are described as a macro or bot and as such are not meant to be used in any way whilst playing Runescape, but using them will not result in your ending up in jail, but if you are discovered using one in the game you will most likely have your Runescape account banned. So I suggest not using them.

Free Runescape Auto Typer Downloads
You can generally find free Runescape Auto Typers download sites via Google, but you need to be aware that there are a lot of fraudulent Runescape bot sites out there offering downloads of macros like the Runescape auto typer when in actual fact they are trying to get you to download a Trojan so they can capture your Runescape username and password, or other valuable information. So be wary or avoid the programs all together.

Runescape auto bots or marcos are programs created to assist in a range of jobs in a game that would originally be in the control of the gamer they are useful tools but are considered cheating in most games and the users of these programs are frowned upon by most but still these programs are an entrenched part of any game these days.

In Runescape there are many different skills you can raise your levels in. There are also just as many macros that can assist you in raising these levels. Most Runescape players who use Runescape autos (Autobots) are as stated in the above paragraph frowned upon by the Runescape society because the use of autos is against the rules and because often the auto bots will be competing against regular playing users for precious resources.

You may find many Runescape cheating websites with autos for download, but if you're considering using one you must be very careful on what exactly you are downloading. This is because of scammers get many unsuspecting Runescape player to download what they believed was a Runescape auto bot but in actual fact they are just downloading a key logger to scam people out of their Runescape names and password. When you use this program it collects your Runescape name and password sends this information to their email so they can gain access to your Runescape account.

There are sites out there that are some websites that do offer real macros but in respect for the rules of the game we won’t be listing them here. Nonetheless if you do find a site offering auto programs make sure you run a quick scan on them first before using them. Here are some of the popular Runescape autos in use at the moment:

Runescape Autofighter
Now there are 2 versions of Runescape autofighter, there is version A and version B and as to which one you choose to download depends on the speed of your computer. Version A is the best version and is only made to work with computers with high CPU and RAM. While Auto fighter version B is for slower computers. This is a program that runs on a color system. This is where you must choose a color on the monster you wish to fight and as a program this auto choose to fight all things that have that color on them. That is where its downside is as you may have chosen a common color brown on a goblin; well the trees are also brown so the macro may choose the tree as the object to fight.

Another good/bad thing about the macros is if you have food you can make a setting to where the macros makes you eat after you are down so in health past a certain point. You may change when the macros makes you eat but you must have the food in your inventory and the auto also will allow you to set a certain amount of life for when you run out of food where it will log you out and this is good if you just won a fight but remember that the rule of you having to wait 10 seconds before you're able to log out after a battle. So this doesn’t make it that useful in some ways.

Runescape Cruel Miner
This auto, if you haven't guessed, is used to raise your mining level. It also involves a color system where you take the indicator and place it on the kind of rock you wish to mine. But this auto only mines the ore then drops it all, this auto does not put the ore in the bank for you. Because of this reason this macro is mainly for leveling not banking and making money.

Runescape Autotalker XPro17
This macro is actually a very useful one to have, it allows you to type something in it and add the color or scroll effects if you like and this auto will say what ever has been typed into it repeatedly until you stop it. This is a very useful way of sell items in the crowed worlds on Runescape. Though this is now probably becoming outdated considering the recent introduction of the Grand Exchange.

Scythe's Autobuyer
This auto allows you to use another color program to buy all of a certain item of that color you have chosen, that is sold to a store. This could be another useful macro unless as stated in autofighter, it chooses from a color so you have to be careful not to use a common color for this macro other wise it could waste your hard earned money on some item you didn’t want.

Auto Clicker
This macro allows you to place it on a certain area and set how many times it will click on this area per minute. This might be useful in mining but the user would have to come back eventually to deposit or drop the ore.

Runescape Magic Cheats
This auto allows you to train your magic but only by teleporting. So in order to use this macro you need to have all the runes necessary for teleporting to the area you want. This macro is a waste I believe unless you have the cash then this is only saving you a couple of clicks you could do yourself in my honest opinion.

Mouse Recorder/Player
This is an interesting macro as it allows you to in a way create your own Auto. What this macro does is records your mouse movements until you stop it and it then repeats the movements and clicks over and over for you. I do suggest if you are using the macro do not move your camera position as it will change where the macro clicks.

S.C.A.R.
This is actually a program that allows you to create your own Autos, but in order to use this program you must first have some concept of understanding of how to create a macro. This can be a very useful program but requires a lot of knowledge as to how to create macros. You may also use other peoples macro files if you can find them, with this program.

I have only named a few autos that I found that work well or ok and have been scanned to be found as true macros and not keyloggers. There are many more macros out there that I will research more on for all macro users but I still state again that I believe is wrong to use macros and that I am against the use of them but it is obvious they are a very popular topic of discussion when it comes to Runescape.
