19th-21st of May were announced by the government as the national mourning days for the people who died in the quake. During the three days, all the national flags in the whole country and at the embassays in different countries were lowered at half mast. At 28:14 on the 19th, (the time when the quake began on the 12th).while air raid sirens and horns of automobiles, trains and ships wailed in grief for three minutes to mourn the dead.

Beijing motorists on the six-lane Jianguomenwai Avenue stood beside their cars honking their horns for three minutes to honor victims of the May 12 earthquake.
