After reading the Show Guide and seeing where the shows were located, I figured I would need a car...don't do it...I probably spent a total of $150 on taxis (you would eliminate this cost totally if you stayed at a hotel near one of the venues). Tucson is undergoing a 5 year freeway renovation project and the traffic is a pain, aside from the fact that finding parking near most of the venues is very tough. The city of Tucson provided (FREE) a system of shuttles that went to the various shows, so if your hotel was near one of the shows - you had free transportation from 8am to 7pm every day.

You can get amazing prices that will beat the Local Bead Store...True and False! If you are going to Tucson as a designer of one-of-a-kind pieces, while prices will definitely beat your LBS, you aren't likely to get any great deals. If you have a beading supply business and can afford to purchase multiples, most vendors will offer deals by the gram, kilogram, or pound. You need to do your homework - most of the vendors deal in millimeters, centimeters, grams or kilograms, know your weights and measures, nothing says amateur like messing up a weight. One way to get your bearings is say an item is priced per carat...get the vendor to weigh out and price a medium size of the stone you are looking at so you will have an idea what you can find in your price range. At the bead vendors watch them weigh out a kilogram of beads for someone (most will let you mix and match and one vendor gave a $100 in free beads to anyone with business ID)...it will give you an idea of whether this is a deal or not.

This is probably the most high-end and popular show...it will truly leave you breathless. Most of the people I talked to didn't go into this show because they felt it was just faceted stones and diamonds...while that is a big portion of the show it also included beads and pearls (a shape I didn't find anywhere else) and due to the larger market presence and budget of the companies represented, this show is key to learning trends and directions in fashion. When you go into the main Gem Hall and see a strand of emerald beads you have an example of what AAA Grade Emerald Beads should look like. While they may be way out of our price range it gives you an ideal for shopping at some of the other venues.

In this article, I will use two bead-nucleated pearls to discuss the Size Value Factor, one of seven value factors to consider when purchasing pearls and pearl jewelry. Tahitian cultured pearls and South Sea cultured pearls are both cultured using bead-nucleation. In bead-nucleation, a bead made from a freshwater mussel shell is inserted into the oyster as part of the culturing process. Also common to these pearl culturing processes, only one pearl is grown at a time. If the oyster produces a healthy, marketable pearl, the oyster may be implanted again. The subsequent nucleus must be slightly larger -- the size of the pearl just removed. So, the second generation pearl is larger.

Can you tell if you are buying a first generation pearl or a third generation pearl? No. You cannot tell the ‘parentage’ of the mollusk just by looking. If you are working closely with the farm, you may have this information. But even the farm is most interested in producing fine quality, lustrous smooth pearls.

When talking about the size of a pearl, you must talk about the variety of pearl as well. For example, size of a Chinese Freshwater Pearl is very different from size of a South Sea Pearl. The Freshwater Pearl is cultured using mantle-tissue nucleation; the South Sea Pearl is cultured using bead-nucleation. Mantle-tissue nucleation adds virtually nothing to the size of the pearl. Bead-nucleation is used to define the size of the pearl -- the bigger the bead, the bigger the pearl.

Naturally occurring pearls are rare, and many thousands of mollusks can be killed in the search for one pearl. This is why natural pearls command the highest prices, as the yield is unpredictable. As pearls are so desirable and so rare, pearl farmers have worked out ways to stimulate the pearl formation process, greatly increasing the yield of pearls. Originating in Japan in the early 20th century, pearl farming involves the artificial introduction of an irritant to the pearl yielding mollusk, followed by its return to its aquatic habitat. The pearls are then given between 2 and 6 years to grow, depending on the size of pearl required, before harvest. Each mollusk can produce up to 32 pearls.

Saltwater pearls are grown in marine mollusks, and are usually rounder and of a higher quality than freshwater pearls. This is because marine mollusks are nucleated with a small bead nucleus as well as the piece of mantle tissue which forms the bead sac, and having a round nucleus to form the scaffolding for the pearl reults in a round pearl being grown. There are multiple types of saltwater pearls available, which explains the confusion around what the various names for pearls actually mean.

Freshwater pearls are cultured in a freshwater environment, as the name suggests. Grown in lakes, ponds and rivers, freshwater mollusks are nucleated by inserting a small piece of mantle tissue into a young mollusk's valve. This can be done up to 25 times per valve, although it is usual to limit insertions to 12-16 per valve. After the growth period the pearls are harvested, dyed (if required), drilled and strung for sale. Freshwater pearls are generally low quality, irregularly shaped and with a lesser luster than their saltwater cousins. As such, they fetch a much lower price, and so are in demand for costume jewelery.

The other thing about size as a value factor is that it is relative to the type of pearl. Akoya Pearls, Tahitian Pearls, South Sea Pearls and freshwater pearls are generally different in size. However due to the different practices used by different cultivators, there may be an overlap in sizes. The size standards are usually, akoyas are the smallest, with sizes up to 9mm or 9.5mm, these being very rare. Freshwater are generally similar in size. Tahitian Black pearls and South Sea pearls start at 10mm and up.

The size of a pearl is dependent upon the size of the mollusk that produced it, the size of the shell bead used to nucleate the mollusk and the length of time building the pearl.

The relative size of a pearl is directly related to the age of the pearl. It takes longer to produce a bigger pearl. Since the longer the pearl is cultured in the oyster, the greater expense is attached. Greater expenses due to higher death rates; greater odds of problems; because, of overall time in the water. With most things time is money, added to greater loss, makes the larger pearl progressively more expensive.

Pearls being nature's creation can have natural blemishes usually small dimples and not generally a problem unless they are obvious. Cracks are not acceptable. The less surface irregularities in a pearl the higher the value, actually surface irregularities are proof of a real pearl and not manmade.
Today we see everything from the rice crispy or keshi pearl, to baroque which can be any shape but round. And round, perfectly round pearls are the most valuable shape.

Now days, there is as many choices in colors from your akoyas which now come in the old standbys of white and creamy white to blue black, to blues, rose, and even grays. And in the Tahitian pearl jewelry there are pistachio, brown, black, gunmetal to silver and reddish green, and blues. Freshwater pearl jewelry can be white, peach, lavender and numerous artificially dyed colors like blues, pinks, chartreuse or lime. South Sea Pearl Jewelry runs from soft white, to soft gold to strong deep gold. Color selection can be a fashion thing but skin color should be the number one thing to compare the pearl color to.

Let me ask you this question. What would you think if a piece of pearl jewelry dull looking like wall paint? What would you think if the piece of pearl jewelry had an inner with a super reflective surface? I know pretty obvious but that is a description of low-luster and high-luster. Luster is not just shine; it has to have that inner glow along with the sheen. The greater the luster the higher the value and grade. Younger pearls tend to have low luster and this is mostly due to the thinness of the nacre. What is nacre? It is the actual substance laid down by the living pearl in layer after layer. Generally the thicker nacre the better the luster, this is usually an older pearl.

When you buy her a gift of love and the obvious gift of love is pearl jewelry. Keep in mind some of these values or qualities that pearls are graded for and subsequently priced by. Pearls are an organically created gem and since they come from nature they are all unique. Artificial pearls are all perfect and that is why they don't compare to the natural beauty of cultured pearls. All of the values are used to grade all types of pearls akoya, Tahitian, freshwater and south sea pearls.

Imitation pearls are a different story altogether. In most cases, a glass bead is dipped into a solution made from fish scales. This coating is thin and may eventually wear off. The best way to distinguish between a natural or cultured pearl and an imitation pearl without sending them to a GIA Lab for X-ray is to use the "tooth test". Rub a pearl on the edge of your teeth. If it feels smooth , the pearl is probably imitation. If the pearl feels rough or gritty, it is probably natural or cultured.

There are three types of pearls; natural, cultured and imitation. The difference between natural and cultured is that natural pearls are formed by nature and cultured pearls are made through human intervention by injecting an irritant into the oyster (like getting dust in your eye). To protect itself, the oyster secretes multiple layers of a calcium carbonate substance called nacre around the foreign object to isolate it from the rest of the oyster. After a few years, the original irritant is covered in a silky coat and that is a pearl. Most pearls fashion jewelry nowadays are cultured pearls, it's rare to find natural pearl and normally they are very expensive and becoming an antique collections.
