The science and art of Periculture changed the face of the pearl industry, and made pearl jewelry infinitely more affordable for use in fashion jewelry. This process was first developed in the early 20th century in Australia. The process then spread to East and South East Asia, and soon Japan became a leading producer of cultured pearls.
In particular, the Akoya pearls - which are slightly smaller than the typical pearl became famous the world over. Environmental pollution and economic considerations however, wiped out Japan's pearl farming industry. Pearl production at Lake Biwa near Tokyo illustrates this problem perfectly. Throughout the 19th century, Japanese pearl farmers had a flourishing production business in Lake Biwa.
Production of cultured pearls hit its peak in the early 1970s, when annual production was on the order of 6 tons! After than peak, environmental pollution caused a steady decline in production until the industry was eventually wiped out. The Japanese tried to restart production in other lakes in the country using different mollusk species but these efforts did not bear fruit.

There is not much difference today. Now, modern jewelry consists of precious metals and stones such as gold, silver, pearl, emerald, or diamond. However, most of these gems are worth a fortune. Only freshwater pearls (those taken from mollusks and oysters living in fresh water) are a little less expensive. But there is another way to look good without straining your finances - wearing coin pearl jewelries.
You can continue to flaunt your pearl jewelry for years and even pass them on to future generations. All you need to do is take proper care and clean it after each use to retain its luster. When not in use, pearl jewelry must be tucked away in soft cloth bags or jewelry pouches away from sunlight. People have an instinctive desire to look good. In ancient times, men and women pierced their bodies with gold rings and tattoos as a way of attracting attention to themselves. Artistic forms of jewelry such as twigs of trees or animal teeth were adorned on their bodies to please the eyes of others in their tribe.

Quality: The quality of pearls is determined on the basis of their size, shape, surface, and luster. As a rule of thumb, pearls that have good luster, round shape, smooth surface, and are big in size are the ones that are usually most expensive and also very rare.
Style: Choose a style that suits your age, personality, and of course, the occasion for which you are buying. You may choose very elegant but small pearl jewelry pieces if you wish to wear them at work.
Shape: While pearls come in different shapes such as irregular, teardrop, oval and round shape, the round ones are the most expensive of the lot. Size: Cost will increase as the size of the pearl increases and jewelry made using big pearls is therefore extremely expensive.
Color: Although pearls are available in different colors, the value of pearls remain unaffected no matter what color it is.

Being not so easily found, pearls were priceless for the rich and elite class. The obsession for pearls grew so much that common people were not allowed to wear pearls in some countries making it a privilege only of the nobles. Pearls today signify purity and are synonymous with timeless beauty and grace.
Type: Freshwater pearls may be your best bet if you are looking for variety in colors and shapes however, these are not as shiny as saltwater pearls that have more luster. Akoya pearls are quite similar to freshwater pearls and are generally found in Japan. As compared to freshwater pearls they have more luster and are also quite symmetrical. The Australian South Sea pearls are larger than other varieties and usually cost more. Tahitian pearls are supposed to be very expensive and are as large as South Sea pearls.
In recent times, the development of pearl cultivation has given birth to cultured pearls that have given a new meaning to pearl jewelry. Cultured pearls are readily available everywhere and are not too heavy on the pocket. Pearls come in different shapes and sizes and can be easily adapted to make an array of unique designs. When selecting pearl jewelry, you need to consider several factors such as the type of pearl you may want to have, the quality of pearls, shape, size, color, and style.

Since times immemorial, pearls have been used widely to make stunning jewelry. More than two thousand years ago in China, the first pearl was used an offering for the emperor, as pearls in those times were regarded to be extremely valuable.
Historical evidence suggests that Queen Dowager Cixi's tomb was decorated using 20,000 pearls and one of the pearls was almost as large as an egg. In olden times, natural pearls were used and pearl hunting was therefore in full swing.
Naturally, the royal family was keen on owning these immaculate pearls to use them to make exquisite accessories. Pearls were not only used for making jewelry but also used to adorn the royal crowns. Soon, pearls were being used to make elegant furniture and even decorate tombs.

While black and creamy white pearls command top dollar, pearls in other colors can be equally lustrous and beautiful - and eminently more affordable. Pearl Shapes The classic pearl shape is round, and the rounder a pearl is, the more expensive it is. An Akoya pearl necklace, for example, is made from round white pearls, while a Tahitian pearl necklace is usually made from round black pearls. Most people don't realize that pearls actually grown in a variety of shapes, from teardrops to sticks to asymmetrical shapes. When you choose pearls that aren't in the traditional round shape, your pearl jewelry becomes a unique personal statement. Pearl Settings Once you get away from the traditional round white pearl necklace and plain pearl earrings, the fashion possibilities are endless. For example, you can select a multicolored pearl pendant with three pearls, one pink, one black, and one white.
Lately, spectacular coin pearl earrings have been catching on. Lustrous and energetic with their tropical purple color, the pearls are fairly flat and are accented with Swarovski crystals set off in silver roundels. Similarly, coin pearl bracelets can be seen on the wrists of trendsetters. These bracelets take, for example, copper coin pearls and accent them with Swarovski crystals, silver roundels, and a toggle clasp. Other Colorful Pearl Jewelry Combinations Pearls and Swarovski crystals aren't the only pairing worn by fashionistas. For a cool, colorful summer look, multicolored pearls (sometimes up to ten different colors) are combined with a dozen different colors of seashell pieces to create a vibrant necklace.
Or you can opt for pearl earrings that add a Swarovski crystal roundel and a fiery red carnelian stone. You can even choose multiple strands made from freshwater pearls, silver, Hematite, and crystals. Depending on how you overlap the strands, you can wear them as a necklace, bracelet, belt, or choker.
